If you are reading this, chances are that you have a child or know a child with special needs. Whether that child was born with their disability or illness or was diagnosed at a later time doesn’t really matter. No parent is ever ready to hear that there is something “wrong” with their child. By that, I mean hearing from a medical professional the news that will change your life forever.
My name is Heather Angstreich and my life was changed forever on November 18, 2006. My son was diagnosed with Autism. I knew very little about my son’s diagnosis when I received it. Everyone reacts differently when they hear news like this. I knew I needed to find out all I could about his diagnosis and what I could do to make his life better. I was very fortunate to have come across people who had valuable information and shared it with me. My son and I had some wonderful experiences with medical professionals, therapists, schools and other services and I wanted to find a way to share it with other parents who were in need of similar information for their child.
There are parents who may not have support from family members or friends or maybe they aren’t ready to talk about their child’s “special” needs. There are even parents who might suspect that there is something “wrong” with their child and don’t know who to turn to for help. Whatever the case may be, I saw a void that needed to be filled for our Long Island special needs community. We, as advocates for our children, need to have as much information at our fingertips as possible. After many years of kicking around the idea of trying to get information to the masses, I founded Special Needs for Special Kids in 2011. Special Needs for Special Kids is a resource directory and website for special needs families all over Long Island. My son is the reason I started this publication.
Special Needs for Special Kids is not only for children who are on the Autism spectrum. My goal is to have something for everyone. If your needs are for a physical disability, neurological disability, psychiatric disorder, illness, learning disability, allergies whatever you can think of I hope to be able to offer you something to help you find your way a little easier. The special needs community needs a resource of a variety of professionals that can help with their particular needs. These are all the people that help us to ensure our children are safe, healthy and provided for. Some children require teams of professionals and some children do not. You need to advocate for your child and get whatever you can for them, but where do you start?
That is a great question!
Special Needs for Special Kids is designed to help you figure it out and help you find what you need. In an effort to give back to Long Island’s special needs community; Special Needs for Special Kids is collaborating with Wexford Financial Strategies and Expos Your Business to bring you the 1st annual Long Island Special Needs for Families Expo. At this event, we are connecting parents with programs, organizations, services and products to help enrich their lives and the lives of their children. Our goal is to have something for everyone under one roof.
Parents will have the opportunity to get the information they need to make educated decisions for their families. This is an opportunity for Long Island’s best special needs providers of services, programs and products to get together and meet with families to offer support and lend a helping hand!
